11 Sep 2009 - NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2009
4th September 2009
Dear Parents/Carers,
Newsletter 1
Welcome back! I hope you all had a good rest over the summer and managed to take a break which, like mine, included a change of scenery and a different pace of life for a few weeks. The children have been sharing their holiday tales with their friends and classes and some clearly had very adventurous summer break! Staff travelled to a variety of exotic destinations and Miss Butler returned as Mrs. Richards, having made her marriage vows on one of the warmest days of the year.
We have almost completed the improvements scheduled for this school closure. It was interesting to note the children’s response to the completed works - the Dyson hand dryer in the refurbished Y2 boys’ toilets seemed to cause the biggest stir. The Foundation Stage outdoor area has had major engineering work carried out and should have its safety surface laid over the weekend with graphics going in the following weekend.
Thank you for sending the children back to school smartly dressed in the correct uniform. They settled enthusiastically into their new classroom routines and caught up with ‘old friends’ very quickly. We will meet our new Reception pupils next week.
Reminders.
Parents/carers collecting children from Classes A, C, D, F, and G should congregate at the cemetery railings side of the playground opposite their child’s classroom and Class N in front of the Dining Hall doors at 3.15 p.m. Please stand as far back as possible to ensure the adult dismissing the class can identify each parent/carer before releasing a child to them. Classes E and M are dismissed onto the
School Rocks Café.
A new lunch menu was sent out last term with the addition of dates to help you make your selection each week. We are very pleased to inform you that the price of lunch remains unchanged. Lunches are charged at £2.00 per day, and should be paid at least a week in advance. Please send cheques payable to Southend Borough Council into school on Mondays with your child’s name and class on the back of the cheque. In an effort to save on paper, NO envelope is necessary.
Coming Events
Parents and guardians are invited to share in our harvest celebration at our Years One and Two Harvest Festival in St. Margaret’s Church,
,
Swine Flu
The DCSF have informed us that individual school closures are now of limited benefit in stopping the spread of disease, which has proved milder than expected. Advice is that children should attend school unless they are displaying flu like symptoms or they have received medical advice that they should not attend. Children who are kept away from school as a precautionary measure will have their absence recorded as UNAUTHORISED.
However, it is still essential that adults or children with flu-like
symptoms should stay away until they are free of those symptoms. They
should contact the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1513513 or at

Community News.
Please keep in your thoughts several staff members and their families who are currently unwell and receiving hospital treatment or care.
The Rotary Club of Thorpe Bay has informed us of a family bike ride event on Sunday 13th September on
The SBC Fostering Team have asked us to advertise an information evening on 29th September 6.30-9.00 p.m. at The Student Union Bar of Southend Town Centre Campus, Essex University inviting you along if you would like to consider fostering.
Volunteers
We are very fortunate to have the regular help and commitment of so many parents, grandparents and former parents in school and in the environmental area. We are currently finalising a timetable of volunteers for this academic year and should be in a position to inform you of this early next week. A letter regarding swimming volunteers went out under separate cover. Safeguarding guidance now recommends that references are taken up on all volunteers in schools and we will contact you with details of this over the coming weeks.
