26 Oct 2009 - NEWSLETTER: AUTUMN HALF TERM 2009

West Leigh Infant School;     22nd October 2009

NEWSLETTER NO. 3

Dear Parents/Carers

West Leigh Infant School has had a great deal to celebrate over the last few weeks.  We were delighted with the attitude of our Y1 and Y2 teams who entered the local Sports’ Partnership KS1 Cross Country event at Eastwood.  Our children demonstrated grit, determination and excellent sportsmanship – and we were placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in several races.    We were also thrilled to be invited to a parliamentary presentation at Portcullis House, Westminster in recognition of the fund raising we did last January for Schools for Africa .  4 Y2 children accompanied Mrs. Brown and myself to London where we were the youngest school represented, to listen to the right Honorable Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State, and John Berkow, Speaker of the House, as well as representatives from Save the Children, World Health Organisation, The David James’ Foundation and School Food Trust.  It was an exciting day for our pupils.  This week Y1 and Y2 went to the Odeon Cinema as part of the National Schools’ Film Week.  The children enjoyed their respective films, The Tale of Despereaux and James and the Giant Peach and behaved impeccably.    Reception had a visit from PCSO Janice Watts this week and Y1 had a dance session with Mrs Bennett.

Reception Curriculum Evening 11th November at 7.30

Parents/carers of Reception children are invited to an evening with their child’s teachers and Learning Support Assistants, understanding the WLIS Early Years Foundation stage curriculum.  This is always a very popular event as it offers opportunities to ask questions as well as hear more about your child’s learning.

Y2 Parents’ Mathematics Workshop 18th November at 7.30

Parents/carers of Y2 children are invited to a presentation and workshop, led by Mrs. Catherine Richards, on teaching calculation – 4 rules.  The evening will begin with a presentation in the Hall with an opportunity to explore some mathematical games and equipment in classrooms.

School Nurse Drop in Clinic

Nurse Kate, our school nurse will be holding a general health drop in clinic on Friday 13th November and Friday 11th December between 2.30 pm and 3.15 pm.  If you would like an appointment please contact Siobham in West Leigh Junior School Office on 478593.

Clubs

CRBs are taking considerably longer to process at present, hence the delay in some new clubs starting.  However, once all checks are complete we will be offering Spanish and Italian to mixed Y1 and Y2 classes of up to 10 children.  Spanish will be on a Monday and Italian on a Thursday from 3.15 to 4.15.  The cost of the lessons will be £6.00, or £80 for 15 lessons.   If you would like to make an expression of interest for either of these courses please email office@westleigh-inf.southend.sch.uk with your child’s name, class and your preferred language.  We will then send out application forms. A Belfairs Sixth Former, Robyn, will be offering a dance class on a Wednesday after school for Y2 beginning 11th November; letters will go out on the first week back.

We are offering a special ‘Fireworks’ Lunch for all on Wednesday, 4th November - £2.00.  Please book and pay on Monday 2nd November only. No late bookings can be accepted as the food needs to be ordered from the suppliers.
